There isn't a certain list of meals you should follow here but more of a greater picture regarding which food groups are your allies during this stressful period. Let's get started...
Omega-3 rich foods. It is true that omega-3 fat acids promote a healthy brain and that is one of the reasons you should consume these types of food close to your exam dates. Some examples are sardines and herring.
Antioxidants. Antioxidants are very important because they keep brain cells in the best shape and away from oxidative stress. Foods rich in antioxidants are berries and especially blueberries. Other sources include beans, cherries, prunes and apples.
Protein. Of course protein couldn’t be excluded from this list. Our brain consists of protein to a great extent so it goes without saying we have to feed it protein rich food. In addition, protein is responsible for the communication of neurons, so it is crucial that you consume protein-rich foods when preparing for an exam. You can find large quantities of protein in egg whites, turkey, chicken, beef, milk, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese and almonds.
Complex carbs. Although I am not directly saying that you should have a bite of this red velvet muffin that you so much want to devour or that piece of chocolate you have been craving since last night, you had better consume carbs that will release energy more slowly in your body and will keep you full longer. Oatmeal is a great solution as well as nuts and fruit. A toast made with whole-grain bread can also be a great alternative.
Water. Our brain consists of 75%-80% water. You can understand the importance of hydration especially in stressful times like when you take exams. It is important to stay hydrated and never skip drinking water, as the slightest deficiency can cause headaches, dizziness and impact your performance.
An extra tip…
On the day of the exam, always have breakfast. Students that have breakfast the morning of the exam are considered to do better compared to those who skip it altogether. So, have a toast with some milk, or overnight oats to save you time; something quick and light to provide you with the necessary energy and keep your brain in optimal condition.
These are my food recommendations for your exam period. I would like to know what your eating routine is during your exams in the comments down below. Like this post and share it with your friends.
