You have planned out your study till the end of the year. You have set your goals and feel really good with yourself and can’t wait to have a very productive year. But, you can’t always predict the future. Life happens in the most peculiar ways and when you least expect it. Whether life gets in the way in a good or a bad sense, you end up losing your focus on your studies. Your deadlines may go out of the window and your targets may start to seem unreachable. Listed below are some techniques you can do to help yourself get back on track and keep up with your studying.
Remove any guilt. Don’t fall for that trap. No matter how guilty you may feel for falling behind at school or university, life incidents will always be there to distract you and suck your energy and attention. If you also feel guilty, you will be distracted even more. Instead, here’s what you can do. Shift your mindset and start thinking of ways to resolve any issues that have come up. Things don’t always go according to plan and guilt won’t get the job done any faster, will it?
Empty your mind. In the middle of your little life crisis and derailment, your mind must be as clear as possible to deal with all the events and unexpected situations while trying to catch up with your studying. So, get a pen and a piece of paper or your digital planner and start putting all your thoughts down. In front of you, there may be a huge to-do list. As odd as it sounds, this is the best place to start. Now that you have everything written down, you can prioritize. Decide which deadlines won’t be met (maybe they are not very important) and make a new schedule. This will include everything that has unexpectedly shown up at your door as well as your daily study schedule to a certain extent.
Talk to your people. Let your family and friends now that you are going through a really stressful period. I would advise you not to hesitate for a second to ask for their help if you think they could help you manage your time better. On the other hand, you may have to turn down a few coffee dates or drink nights if you can’t make it, so be completely honest. I know it’s hard but in the end it will be worth it.
Be strategic. Ok, time is of the essence and you have got very little of it in your hands. What you should do is carefully plan where to allocate your energy and attention. This is not the time to study hard and start from the beginning. You won’t make it on time. A trick that is really helpful is to concentrate on the study areas that are going to deliver the best outcomes. You know what these are. It could be a Maths test that you studied for but didn’t have time to finish your homework on other subjects. Still you studied for that important Maths test and you got an A? That’s great!
Focus on self-care. Even in times like these when you come home at night so tired that you want to go straight to bed without even brushing your teeth, you have to find 5-10 minutes during your day to practice self-care and gradually recover. Think of them as a 10-minute gift to yourself. Not to mention it is really important that you recharge your batteries in order to be able to continue.
Challenges, change and disruption will always be a part of our lives. It’s best to see them as opportunities to grow and evolve. During these times, these 5 steps above will help you keep up with your studies and also be actively present in your life. What are your coping mechanisms when life knocks on your door?
